The musical Billy Elliot is about an 11-year-old working class boy who grows up in Durham in the early 80s. The town’s economy is based on the mines and when the government decides to close them down, the town is struggling for survival. Billy’s mother is dead, and his father and brother are macho working class men who want Billy to be like them and take boxing classes. However, Billy by mistake stumbles upon a ballet class, and realizes that’s what he wants to do with his life. This is totally unaccepted by his father. The musical is based on the film Billy Elliot, but it isn’t identical.

This is everything a musical should be – funny, emotional, great singing, fantastic dancing, and most important of all, it’s very poignant. Definitely one of the top shows n London – I’ve seen it twice already but would like to see it again. Especially the performances of these young boys never cease to amaze me.
